2020…this year has really been a bummer. One of the only good things we’ve seen from it are some of Sonos’s new products! Sonos has some fantastic new products for 2019 and 2020 that have made listening to your favorite music more impactful, easier and better-sounding than ever. Listed below are two of our favorite new Sonos products; the Sonos AMP powered streaming amp and the Sonos ARC reference soundbar.

Sonos AMP - $649.00: This piece has become our go-to when powering areas of audio, especially when these areas are separated from where all of the audio/video equipment is housed. In the past, you would need to walk to where all of the equipment was located, pick your music, push a few more buttons to make speakers in other areas play and then walk back to the area you wanted to listen in. Now, you can be in any room with speakers, touch a few buttons on your phone and you’re rocking! This is great for outdoor areas or large homes where the equipment is located in a room/closet that is far away.

The included 125 watt X 2 channel amplifier is powerful enough to drive most speakers on the market. In fact, this will make most existing audio systems sound MUCH better than they currently do. This is because many existing whole-house audio set-ups are using amplifiers that deliver 5-30 watts/channel to the speakers. This increase in power from using the Sonos AMP will in most cases, give you better bass, clearer highs and more-defined sound. NOTE: If you already have amplifiers or a surround sound receiver, you can use the Sonos PORT streaming device to provide these streaming services without the power that the AMP provides. The Sonos AMP also includes the Sonos “brain” which gives you access to almost every app known to Man such as Spotify, Pandora, iHeart, Apple Music, etc. You can use Sonos AMPs to power different areas of the house or landscape. If you opt to do this, each area can either have its own source (ex: one room could have “The Smiths” on Spotify while another room has “The Beatles” station on Pandora) OR you can touch a button and all of the areas are playing the same thing! This is great for gatherings or parties.

NOTE: When using the AMPs in large homes or in spacious backyard settings, you need to ensure that your WiFi network is sufficient to provide adequate range and bandwidth. See our article HERE that discusses a great WiFi network.

Sonos ARC - $799.00: The Sonos ARC is their new soundbar for 2020 that replaces the Sonos PLAYBAR model which was their staple for many years. This 8 woofer, 3 tweeter, 11 channel marvel sounds fantastic, allows you to play the Sonos music sources detailed above and can be incorporated into surround sound set-ups with the separate Sonos SUB subwoofer and Sonos ONE rear speakers. The limitation of most soundbars in the past is that they have frankly, sounded middling at best. Thin mid-range, minimal bass and operational issues have been the norm (the need to power cycle cheapy soundbars is very common…this is when they lock up, won’t do anything and you have to unplug them/plug them back in to get them to work). This isn't the case with Sonos. The Sonos ARC can provide GREAT sound in a soundbar format, which can be cheaper and easier to wire than a conventional surround sound system. We give it two thumbs up!

Who owns the Home Wireless Music Streaming Industry?

Sonos, by far, owns this market – hands down.  After all, they are the pioneers of the wireless home sound system.  They were established back in 2002 and have been solely focused on this market for almost 20 years. For a while there, they were the only company making systems of this kind. Since then many other companies have jumped in and are giving this market a try.  One of the more reputable companies is Denon with their Heos Wireless Speaker Devices and Heos-enables devices.

Does Heos give Sonos a run for its money?

The answer to this question is a big YES IT DOES.  Heos brings some great products and features to the table that could definitely sway a person to use Denon’s Heos as an excellent alternative to Sonos.  They both are controlled and setup using a free downloadable App on your phone or tablet.  They both have devices that can create a whole house wireless music system.  They both can stream most of the popular music streaming services available.  They both offer varying sizes of wireless speakers with pretty comparable prices ranging from $150 to $900, and so on.

Any major differences between Sonos and Heos?

- Ease of use and setup:  

Sonos takes Heos on this one.  The Sonos App is incredibly easy to use, works consistently and the setup process is quick and straightforward.  Heos’ App is a bit more clunky to navigate around in and the setup process isn’t always as smooth as Sonos’.

- Features:

Heos takes Sonos on this front.  Unlike Sonos, Heos devices are Bluetooth capable and are dual-band WiFi ready, so they can connect to either the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz band of your router.  Only the brand new Sonos Move has Bluetooth capability and all Sonos devices are single-band WiFi, 2.4Ghz capable. All Heos speaker devices have an audio line-in jack, a USB port, and a couple of the speakers even have a headphone jack. Heos supports Hi-Res audio, 96 KHz/24 bit, where the highest Sonos supports is CD quality, 44.1 KHz/16 bit. Heos also is built-into many Denon and Marantz receivers and this saves you money over buying a separate streamer (which you have to do with Sonos as it isn't built into any receivers today).

- Functionality:

Sonos wins this battle. Sonos plays with more partners and companies than any other streaming product.

So which one do I choose? If you like the idea of something that is easy to use and that plays with all kinds of different apps, Sonos may be for you. If you want something that you can take with you where you may not have WiFi OR you want the best streaming quality possible, Heos should be your choice.

Sonos Beam vs. Sonos Playbar - Which Sonos soundbar is best?

The Sonos BEAM is here! This piece is Sonos' new low-priced soundbar offering that is competing with similar offerings from Polk Audio, Samsung, Yamaha and others. We have written HERE previously about why Sonos is great. However, we'd like to go over the compare the Sonos BEAM vs the Sonos PLAYBAR which is their premium soundbar solution. In a nutshell:

Pros of Sonos Beam:

The Sonos BEAM sells for $399.00 vs. $699.00 for the Sonos PLAYBAR. Benefit $$$!

The Sonos BEAM has Alexa built-into the soundbar. This allows you to operate many functions with just your voice!

Pros of the Sonos Playbar:

Better Sound: The Playbar uses 9 built-in speakers vs. 5 built-in speakers for the Beam. This allows the Playbar to provide fuller sound and audio that fills up a room.

Cleaner mounting: The Sonos Playbar can be mounted vertically or horizontally. This makes for a much cleaner look when it is mounted under a TV as it doesn't protrude as far from the wall. The Sonos Beam will stick out substantially past the wall-mounted TV in most cases. If you want an aesthetic and subtle look, the Playbar is our recommendation.

Hook-up Method: The Sonos Playbar uses what is called an optical cable to provide the audio channels. The Sonos Beam uses an HDMI cable and relies on a technology called ARC (audio return channel). Guys like us hate ARC as it isn't as reliable as we'd like. This lack of reliability can cause things to turn off that shouldn't, can cause components to go to the wrong input, etc. For better reliability and ease-of-use, we recommend the Playbar.

Summary:

We are BIG fans of the Playbar over the Beam. However, they both have their place. Choose the Playbar if you have a large room, want BETTER sound or a clean look when wall-mounted. Choose the Beam if you are on a budget or if you want to get better sound in secondary areas such as Guest Bedrooms, Kids' Rooms, etc.

Want to install a Sonos wall mounted speaker...read on!

Sonos speakers are great but in the past, there hasn't been a way to cleanly wall mount them. The problem is that legally, we can't run the power cables in the wall (against California code) so you would see them laying exposed on the wall. However, one of our installation partners just came up with a solution. Midlite now has a LEGAL in-wall power solution that allows us to hide the power cable and that doubles as a wall mount! This makes for a much cleaner look, especially when using Sonos speakers as rear speakers in a surround sound configuration.

Sonos PLAY5 stereo demo - San Diego

Our Sonos rep stopped by the office today to see if we had experienced the Sonos PLAY5 speakers. We have heard them previously but we were intrigued by his stereo demo offer so we took a break to listen. In a nutshell, this entails using 2 of Sonos' reference speakers in stereo (just one pair of speakers). After listening to multiple tracks through these speakers, we were blown away by the bass, accuracy and imaging from this set-up.

This configuration could be a GREAT way to get a good sounding stereo set-up without spending a ton of money. For example, a quality stereo list of gear reads as follows:

Pros of Sonos: Sonos has partnered with more companies than anyone else. What this means to you is that you have more music options with Sonos than with any other company. If you want the greatest number of choices for music, Sonos is what we recommend. Sonos also has fantastic after-market support. With wireless devices like Sonos and others, the wireless environment in your home can affect how well these devices work. Pros of Definitive Technology: Sound quality! In our opinion, the Definitive Technology components sound MUCH better than Sonos at the same price point. Tests in our office between the Definitive Technology WAMP and the Sonos CONNECTAMP (these are both wireless music players that have amps built-in to power your speakers) instantly illustrated that the Def Tech WAMP was louder, cleaner and provided better bass. We also were fans of Definitive Technology's portable models (W7 and W9) over the Sonos option (PLAY5). We also liked the fact that when your phone or tablet goes to sleep that you can still control your Definitive Technology device whereas with the Sonos you have to go into your device to wake it up before you can control your Sonos piece. Ex: You are using the device in your Gym. A song comes on that makes you sleepy. With Def Tech, you can instantly skip over that track. With Sonos, you can't until you open your device up.

To sum it up, go with Sonos if you want the most choices for music or if you have more than 5 of these units throughout the house. Choose Definitive Technology if you want the BEST sound quality and if you like being able to control your music without having to wake up your devices constantly.

UPDATE AS OF 07/24/2020: SOME THINGS HAVE CHANGED SINCE WE ORIGINALLY WROTE THIS ARTICLE. SONOS NOW HAS WHAT THEY CALL THE SONOS AMP WHICH IS A MORE POWERFUL OFFERING (125 WATTS x 2). THIS UNIT OFFERS BETTER SOUND THAN THEIR OLD UNIT (CONNECTAMP). SONOS HAS A MUCH BETTER FUNCTIONING APP AND THIS ALONE IS THE REASON THAT WE'D RECOMMEND USING SONOS OVER DEFINITIVE TECHNOLOGY. EX: I AM USING THE DEF TECH APP AT THIS MOMENT TO CONTROL SPOTIFY. AT LEAST HALF OF THE TIME WHEN I TURN THE VOLUME DOWN ONE TOUCH, IT GOES DOWN ALL THE WAY. FRUSTRATING. THE DEF TECH APP ALSO IS INTERMITTENT IN GIVING ME PLAY/PAUSE CONTROLS WHEN MY PHONE TIMES OUT. THIS MEANS THAT I HAVE TO OPEN MY PHONE AGAIN, ENTER THE PASSWORD, ETC. BEFORE I CAN MAKE ANY CHANGES TO THE EXISTING MUSIC. DID I MENTION NO BASS/TREBLE CONTROLS OR VOLUME LIMITING IN THE DEF TECH APP? THE LATTER MEANS THAT I CAN'T GET THE DEFINITIVE TECHNOLOGY APP TO GET TO A MODERATE VOLUME LEVEL. IT IS EITHER TOO LOUD OR TOO SOFT. IN OUR HUMBLE OPINION, GO WITH SONOS AND BUY IT FROM US...SAN DIEGO SONOS EXPERTS.
